Renew or apply for a new passport

You can renew (PPTC 482, simplified) if your most recent passport:

  • is an adult passport issued when you were 16 or older, valid for 5 or 10 years;
  • was issued within 15 years of the date you apply;
  • shows the same name, date of birth and place of birth you want on the new passport.

Apply for a new passport (PPTC 040) if you are changing your name, date of birth, place of birth or gender identifier, or if your first Canadian passport was a child passport. Without a valid reason, you may have to wait until your passport expires in 12 months or less.
